After accidentally graduating from University with an honours degree in Business Administration, I fell into my first role selling pensions and investments to brokers, on behalf of a couple of large insurance companies.
Selling Investment Bonds and Executive Pension Plans by taking dull financial advisers out for pub lunches and rounds of golf wasn’t really my bag. So, in pretty short order, I joined the family business – an 8-year-old firm of Independent Financial Planners in Surrey, Informed Choice.
The rest is, as they say, history.
During my 18-year career with Informed Choice, I’ve played a small part in creating one of the most successful firms of Chartered Financial Planners in the South East of England.
Today, we have a team of 16 superstars working from our offices in Surrey and Petersfield, looking after around £500 million in client assets.
I’m a Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society, and I hold the CII Award in Long Term Care Insurance and the CII Certificate in Discretionary Investment Management.
I wrote my first book, The Money Tree as a young, inexperienced financial adviser back in 2006. Becoming a published author was a shortcut to credibility when working with retired millionaires.
I’m the winner of Dynamic Planner of the Year, Best IFA Individual, and Best Social Media IFA.
I’ve also been named as one of the Most Influential Financial Advisers in Britain by Professional Adviser magazine for 4 consecutive years and as a Top 100 IFA by Citywire’s New Model Adviser magazine.
As a business, we have been awarded IFA of the Year by Money Marketing, the Gold Standard Award for Independent Financial Adviser (six times!), Best IFA Firm, Best Retirement Adviser, the Toast of Surrey Awards, and countless other trophies.
How I spend my time now
My role at Informed Choice now is Director of Client Education. I no longer advise individual clients, instead overseeing our comprehensive communication programme and chairing our investment committee.
On a typical day, I record podcast interviews, film and edit YouTube videos, write blogs and articles, read research papers and press releases, speak to journalists and walk the dogs.
I’m also the founder of a boutique content production agency, Bamford Media, which has deep financial services marketing experience and works with a select group of clients.
My commute takes approximately 20 seconds, to the bottom of our garden where I work from my ‘shedquarters’ which also serves as my podcast and YouTube studio.
Away from work
Family comes first. I’m a devoted dad to three wonderful children and husband to an outstanding forest school teacher.
We have a menagerie of pets, including two (soon to be three) dogs, a cat, two hamsters, and a horse.
I love the Great Outdoors, so time away from my desk is spent walking through the ancient woodland behind our home in Surrey, kayaking on the River Wey, trying to capture the perfect landscape photograph, wild swimming or (when my dodgy ankle permits) trail ultra distance running.
With my parents on the finish line of the North Downs Way 50 ultra marathon.
